Cooking links all of humanity, past and present. September's #ConnectingCollections focuses on the traditions and practices that developed around food in the ancient world. ⠀
⠀
Across ancient cultures, communal drinking at banquets provided an opportunity for social bonding. These events were frequently depicted in a wide range of media, from small Mesopotamian cylinder seals to large Greek vases. ⠀
⠀
At the Greek symposium — a drinking party — men of the social elite would gather and mingle over cups of wine while singing songs, discussing ideas, or playing games.⠀
⠀
The first image is a krater from the Getty collection. This type of vessel formed the centerpiece for any symposium and was used for mixing wine and water, which would then be served into the drinkers' cups. The shared use of the krater is similar to the large pot of beer from which Mesopotamian banqueters drink with long straws on a cylinder seal from pennmuseum. ⠀
⠀
Though these objects were made over 2,000 years apart, both the cylinder seal and the krater depict drinking parties in full flow.
