Cooking links all of humanity, past and present. This month’s #ConnectingCollections focuses on the traditions and practices that developed around food in the ancient world.

metgreekandroman recently shared their Greek fish-plate. Its decoration shows the importance of seafood in the ancient Mediterranean diet. Greece’s miles of coastline provided lots of opportunities for fishing, but let’s see what happened once the fishers brought their catch home.

In this second image, featuring a black-figure cup in our collection, a man carries an impressive fish, perhaps a tuna. Turning the cup around, we see where it’s destined—the chopping block, to be sliced and sold.

Fish, fresh or pickled, was a highly valued addition to the ancient Greek diet, which consisted primarily of grains, dairy products, and fruits and vegetables.

As you can see in this skyphos (drinking cup), cooking would have been done over a brazier or on a grill.Take a close look at the several utensils and storage vessels. At the center is a portable grill, hanging on the wall beneath a chytra, a kettle-like vessel for boiling water.
