## Caption

Video artist Bill Viola draws inspiration from western devotional subject matter, particularly the medieval and Renaissance periods, to address universal themes relating to the human experience.

Through his use of extreme slow motion, the expressions and gestures of the figures central to the narrative are heightened to allow the physical complexities of each emotion to be fully exercised.

In this still from the work “Emergence,” we see two women sitting on either side of a marble cistern as a young man suddenly rises from the water. The younger woman grasps his arm, as if greeting a long-lost lover, while the older woman prepares to catch him in her arms and bursts into tears.

"Emergence" was commissioned by the Getty Museum as part of the exhibition Bill Viola: The Passions, organized in 2003. The video was inspired by a fresco from the 1400s by Masolino da Panicale, in which the dead Christ is shown at the moment of Resurrection.
