Contact with soil plays an important role in our health. 

Over hundreds of thousands of years, humans evolved with environmental microbes through exposure to soil and other natural environments. 🌳 As we’ve transitioned into modern living 🏙 and distanced ourselves from the outdoors, we’ve lost much of this contact, which has had cascading effects on the development of our microbiomes, immune systems, and overall health. 

Present day, gardening is one of the ways humans interact with soil. And this interaction has a detectable impact on our microbiome. 🤓

In a study¹ conducted earlier this year, researchers evaluated the microbial profiles of fecal 💩and soil 🌱 samples collected from gardening and non-gardening families. They found that consistent contact with gardening soil resulted in the transfer of soil-derived bacteria to humans, which was associated with a more diverse gut microbial structure in gardening families compared to non-gardening ones. 

Gardening families also tended to have a greater fiber intake (from consuming the fruits 🍓 and vegetables 🥕they grew) and a higher abundance of several fiber-fermenting bacteria.
