Roughly a fifth of all coral in the world has died in the past three years alone, including half of the Great Barrier Reef.

As coral reefs suffer, so too does the surrounding aquatic and plant life, and the ocean as a whole. Corals are the backbone of a delicate ecosystem, and a living demonstration of symbiosis: they provide a safe home to a quarter of all marine species including fish, worms, crustaceans, mollusks, sponges, and trillions of microbes—including the algae that live within its polyps and photosynthesize energy and filter waste.

But this system also hangs in an extremely precarious state. If the average temperature of the water surrounding a coral reef is raised just a degree or two, the system is altered and begins to fail.

Like a coral reef, you too are teeming with life, home to a community of 38,000,000,000,000 microorganisms. In this way you are kindred, belonging to an a larger ecosystem. Human health is planetary health, and it's time to consider and act on choices that better serve both. #WorldReefDay
