It took 42 years, 7 months, and 16 days for the constitutional amendment granting a woman’s right to vote to be ratified. Only 6 countries (out of 187 measured) offer equal legal work rights to women. At the current rate of progress, it will take another 108 years to reach gender parity. Women represent 47% of the U.S. workforce but hold only 24 spots on the Fortune 500 list of CEOs. And on average, women still only earn 80 cents to a man's dollar.⁣⠀

This year, #InternationalWomensDay calls for #BalanceforBetter: “The world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence.” Progress is present. The gender pay gap is gradually closing. But absence is felt in another, less obvious light. The impact can be relatively minor (the placement of products on hard-to-reach, male-height shelves) or life threatening (crashing in a car when industry safety tests didn’t involve female crash dummies until 2011).⁣⠀

This is the gender data gap. And it exists across all aspects of our daily lives—even in science.⁣⠀

Until the late 1970s, the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging followed more than 1,000 men and no women. A recent 25-person study enrolled 23 men to examine interactions between alcohol and a female libido-boosting product. Cardiovascular diseases is the number one killer of U.S. women, but the FDA recently published an article acknowledging that across 36 trials seeking cardiovascular drug approvals, only 34% of 224,417 participants were women. The sleep aid Ambien was originally approved at a dose two times higher than is safe for women, and a 2001 study revealed that 8 in 10 drugs recalled from the U.S. market were found to pose a greater health risk to women than men.⁣⠀

Every cell in our bodies has a sex. Physiological differences like height, weight, body fat, hormonal responses, and metabolic processes mean diseases, treatments, medicines, chemicals, and more can all affect men and women differently. But when female subjects have historically been excluded from clinical research and continue to be underrepresented today, that means an information deficit, unknown efficacy, and deep, rippling effects on human health.⁣⠀
