You already know a #microscope 🔬shows us the #invisible and unseen, but do you know how a microscope actually works?⠀
⠀
At the simplest level, a microscope is basically a tube with #lenses (curved pieces of glass) inside that bend light rays ☀️, making objects appear bigger than they are. #Compound microscopes (the ones we use in #science class) have at least two lenses (objective and eyepiece). The powerful objective lens produces the first #magnification. This #image is then magnified again by the eyepiece lens to form a #virtual image (like your #reflection in a #mirror), which is projected onto your #retina. Very, very simply, a compound microscope is just two magnifying glasses 🔍🔍 lined up.⠀
⠀
The very first microscopes were just magnifying glasses. In the 1st century (year 100), #Romans were looking through lenses and realizing that objects appeared larger in them. In the 13th century, spectacle makers started producing lenses to be worn as #glasses. Then, in the 1590’s, two #Dutch glasses makers, Zaccharias Janssen and his father Hans, put several lenses in a tube and made a startling discovery—the image at the end of the tube was much larger than any magnifying glass could generate. This first microscope had a magnification of just 9x.⠀
⠀
We’ve come a long way since—today, with an #electron microscope (story for another day), we can magnify up to 10,000,000x with incredible clarity. 😧⠀
⠀
Take a look at the three microscopy images above—can you guess what they are?⠀
