All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. 

What's the difference? Tortoises are a subspecies of turtles. An easy way to think of it is that most turtles prefer water, but tortoises prefer land. Terrapins are a fun mix of both. "Turtle" is a catch-all term for all of the above. Clear as mud, right?
