It's a World Penguin Day edition of the Penguin Progress Report 🐧 Waddle your way below to see which of our African Penguins was good, and which needs improvement.

Our good penguin is, again, Lucas. He has been keeping company with his girlfriend Katy, but has also been a gentlepenguin to the Wildlife Care Specialists. We have been working with Lucas to develop a special shoe to protect an injury on his foot, and he has been patient and cooperative when the Wildlife Care Specialists need to help him put his shoe on. Because he's been so sweet, he is our good penguin of the month.

Our penguin who needs improvement is McKinney. McKinney has gotten a bit too big for his britches and has been nipping at the Wildlife Care Specialists when they enter the habitat to feed the colony. He doesn't want to wait his turn for fish and he makes sure to let the Wildlife Care Specialists know that he wants to be fed NOW! McKinney needs to brush up on his manners and stop being impatient. McKinney needs improvement.

These charismatic birds are a staple to their ecosystem. They encourage the flow of nutrients from the ocean to their colonies, increasing available nutrients for surround species. They're also a food source for local predators such as sharks and seals. Their numbers have plummeted in recent years due to habitat loss, over-fishing and coastal development. SDZWA is proud to work with our partners in South Africa to help rebuild populations and save our tuxedoed friends.
