At some point she realized the answer was not to build a protective wall so thick around her to keep the world out. The answer was not to stay still and safe and quiet. The answer was to stay awake and open, to sing the strength into her spine instead. To work on her resilience, her confidence, trust in her own discernment, instead of trying to avoid any situations that could end in heartbreak, or rejection, or confrontation, or an ambiguous life path. When she did this, she could move through the world and the safety came with her wherever she went. Because it was her. She had the confidence that she could meet the world awake and open, knowing in those moments that life completely knocked the wind out of her, she would meet it, move through it, and survive. And that way, she wouldn’t miss the other stuff. The by-chance connections, the fun risks, the potential to be known and held by some people who really, really fucking matter.
