🎉Important policy news alert!🎉

Last year at COP26, 145 countries pledged to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030.

Yesterday, at #COP27, a group of more than 20 countries launched the Forest and Climate Leaders Partnership (FCLP).

We welcome this news. Let’s dive into what it means!

The FCLP consists of Government leaders, engaging with companies, and Indigenous Peoples. Yesterday, they joined together for the first time to turn last year’s COP26 pledges into action to halt and reverse forest loss by 2030.

The member countries account for 33% of the world’s forests and 50% of the world’s GDP.

The group will provide a space for innovation and problem solving. They will shine a spotlight on progress towards the nature pledges made at COP26, each year till 2030. Now, we urgently need this space to drive action, ensure genuine accountability, and build momentum.

Though progress has been made since COP26 – we need to do more. Globally, we’re still not on track to halt or reverse deforestation by 2030, and tropical forests are being cut down to grow crops such as soy, palm oil and cocoa. In the UK, we’re key consumers of these products.

Deforestation threatens wildlife, people, and climate. It’s one of the leading reasons for biodiversity loss: from hippos to hornbills. It’s estimated to account for 10%-15% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and our forests support the livelihoods of millions of people.

The science is clear: If we fail to protect biodiversity, we’ll fail to combat the climate crisis - and vice versa. We simply cannot afford to lose our precious forests. Deforestation threatens the future of life on earth.

So, we welcome the launch of the FCLP. It’s a hugely positive step!

Now, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: It’s time to build on promises and drive action. To protect our forests, our climate, our wildlife and our shared future 💙
