How might a changing climate impact one of our most common garden birds?

Blue tits feed their nestlings mostly with caterpillars, which are abundant for a short period each spring. They only nest once - so they have to get it right. Climate change has led to warmer, earlier springs and caterpillars emerge earlier as they track this change of temperature. Blue tits need to change their timing of nesting to match. If they get the timing wrong, fewer nestlings survive.

Currently, blue tits have managed to adapt by nesting earlier, although there may be limits to how much further they can change their timing. This is just one reason why we all need to come together to slow climate change.

Join #GreatBigGreenWeek and Scotland's #ClimateFringeWeek to celebrate action on climate change and call for ambition at COP26 in November.
