So! edfenergy have just submitted plans for a new nuclear power plant next to our reserve at RSPB Minsmere. We #LoveMinsmere, and want to help you understand why we think it must not go ahead.

RSPB Minsmere is an important wildlife haven; it holds the protection of SSSI, SAC, SPA and Ramsar Site conservation statuses. Its habitats include four national conservation priorities: reedbeds, lowland wet grassland, shingle vegetation and lowland heath. More than 6000 different animals, plants and fungi have been recorded at Minsmere – more than on any other RSPB reserve, and amongst the highest of any nature reserve in the UK. It hosts a range of wildlife, including important populations of bitterns, marsh harriers and avocets! And Minsmere is home to more than birds - otters, water voles, kingfishers, specialist plants, & rare dragonflies can be found in the wetlands. Across the heathland there are nightjars, woodlarks, adders, natterjack toads & silver-studded blue butterflies!

The plans to build a new twin nuclear reactor (Sizewell C) on the Suffolk coast would bring the Sizewell estate right up to the border of our reserve. That alone is not the problem! Sizewell C has the potential to cause significant negative impacts on the reserve’s land and animals. Did you know that artificial light can disturb birds? And that building new coastal structures could potentially accelerate the erosion of Minsmere’s coastline?

We have not seen enough evidence from EDF that Sizewell C can be built without detrimentally impacting the landscapes, habitats and species of the Suffolk coast. Without this evidence we have been forced to conclude that the build must not go ahead given it’s anticipated harmful impacts on the environment. We have united in this position with suffolkwildlifetrust.

As we face threats of both the #ClimateCrisis & a global biodiversity collapse, we will continue to stand against edfenergy’s harmful actions. It is important that we address these challenges and develop in harmony with nature; this means the right technology in the right place.
