Mexican-American Patricia Guerrero made history in 2022 when she was sworn in as the first Latina judge of California’s Supreme Court. A daughter of Mexican immigrants, Guerrero graduated from University of California, Berkeley before earning her Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School in 1997. As a lawyer, she assisted in pro bono cases dealing with immigration, and fair housing laws. Guerrero has had a long career in law including her time as a member of the Advisory Board of the Immigration Justice Project and being a member of the Latino Law Students Association in college. Prior to her swearing in, she was a justice for the California 4th District Court of Appeal as well as a judge for the San Diego County Superior Court from 2013 to 2017.⁠

"I'm incredibly honored to take the bench on our state's Supreme Court, and I thank everyone who has made this day possible," Guerrero said in a statement. "I am here because of the courage, sacrifices and dedication of my parents and my grandparents who, like so many others, came to this country with the hope of a brighter future for their children."⁠
