Only a month into Donald Trump’s second term, his administration is already targeting undocumented and immigrant communities through massive deportation roundups, with a total of over 8,700 people having been arrested by federal immigration authorities following Trump’s promise to deport “the worst first.” However, new data obtained by NBC News reveals that as detention centers reach the upper limits of their capacity, the number of detainees without a criminal conviction or pending criminal charges increased by more than 1,800 people in the first two weeks of February, making up 41% of the 4,422 total new detainees in that period. From early February to mid-February, the number of people detained went from around 39,200 to 41,200 people, almost reaching ICE’s nationwide detention capacity of 41,500 people.

“I think one thing that has been clear is that all immigrants are now an enforcement priority, or removal priority,” said Rohmah Javed, Legal Director of the Legal Aid Justice Center’s Immigration Justice Program. “That was always different under other administrations… We are absolutely seeing massive anxiety and fear.”
