Google has made the Gulf of America, formerly the Gulf of Mexico, official. 

On Monday, February 10, Google Maps has changed the Gulf of Mexico’s name to the Gulf of America for U.S.-based users. The change comes after the company previously said it would change the Gulf’s name in accordance with Donald Trump’s Executive Order titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” which required the Geographic Names Information System to update the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. On Tuesday, Apple followed in Google’s footsteps and changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in its maps app for users in the U.S., and according to Bloomberg, the name change would be rolled out globally at a later date.

In response, Mexico has condemned the change, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum saying that the U.S. has no right and cannot unilaterally change the name of the Gulf.
