AOC continues to speak up against the Trump administration. For many, it seems like the news of the Trump administration’s recent executive orders and actions becomes more and more challenging with each passing day, and it can be difficult to feel hopeful for the country’s political and cultural atmosphere and future. Since Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has been vocal about the administration’s harmful executive orders, even taking to Tiktok to post a series of videos condemning the administration and explaining how she plans to help. On Tuesday, February 4, AOC took to social media once again, hopping on Instagram Live to discuss the newest executive orders and how the administration’s goal is to get the public to lose hope:

“If you are watching the news right now and you are feeling overwhelmed by all of the constant headlines and developments and what is happening… First of all, know that you are not alone. And second of all, know that that is exactly what this administration is trying to get you to feel… What authoritarian regimes try to do is that they often try to, what is known as ‘flood the zone’… It’s important for you to understand that the paralysis and shock that you feel right now is the point. They are trying to induce a state of passivity among the general public.”

In a recent Latina USA interview with renowned Mexican-American journalist Maria Hinojosa, AOC explained how joy is an important and necessary act of resistance: “You’re allowed to be happy. You are allowed to cultivate joy. In fact, you need to because our job is to build the world that we want.”
