Latin American history is Black history and it’s important we celebrate Afro-Latinidad as well as recognize colorism, anti-Blackness, and racism in our community. Dominicana Amara La Negra (amaralanegraaln) is known for speaking proudly of her Afro-Latinidad and raising awareness of colorism. In an interview with NPR, the singer and TV personality said: “If I say I’m Afro-Latina, you’ll automatically, visually in your mind see [that] I’m dark. And [in] my family we all speak Spanish, we’re Latinos. This is my culture.”
