(Spanish version available at end of video) Following Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, massive immigration raids have been occurring in major U.S. cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, and more. Additionally, with policies restricting ICE from entering “sensitive” areas being rolled back by the Trump administration, undocumented and immigrant communities are wondering what they can do to stay safe. In the case you’re approached by ICE at home, work, or in public, it’s important that you know your rights and are prepared for any interaction. Start by creating a plan and carrying a “know your rights” card, and remember to exercise your rights if you are approached by agents.

To prepare a plan in case you are approached by ICE,  identify local nonprofit and legal aid organizations offering legal support services. Find a reliable immigration legal advocate or attorney, and write down and remember their contact information. Start saving money to hire an attorney and pay legal fees or bonds. Obtain a “know your rights” card stating your right to remain silent and speak to an attorney and make sure your attorney’s contact information is on the card. Collect important documents like passports, birth certificates, and medical records and keep them in a safe place. Share this preparedness plan with someone you trust, and do not carry any false documents.

In any possible interactions, record the event if you are able by taking pictures and videos with audio and noting details like badge numbers, the number of agents, the exact time and place of the occurrence, and the type of car the agents drove. Sync your photos and videos to the cloud so that if you record an interaction, others can access it, and do not spread unverified info to avoid spreading unnecessary panic.
