La Cuetlaxochitl, also known as Flor de Noche Buena or Poinsettia, originates from Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico. Its Nahuatl name means “mortal flower that perishes and withers like all that is pure” and it was introduced to the United States in 1828 by Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. It's commonly mostly seen during Christmas for its red color but the plant has Indigenous roots and a rich history that goes beyond being a holiday adornment. Read along to learn more about its origin, spiritual significance and its medicinal uses.
