## Caption

La Catrina is an iconic symbol of Dia De Los Muertos, but do you know her interesting extensive history? The beloved female skeletal figure is believed to be inspired by the Aztec peoples’ goddess of death Mictēcacihuātl, who watched over the bones of the dead in Mictlán. In 1910 during the Mexican Revolution, Mexican illustrator and printmaker José Guadalupe Posada created “La Calavera Garbancera,” a satirical metal etching depicting a skeleton wearing an elegant feathered hat that criticized the fixation that many Mexicans had with European culture. In 1930, painter Diego Rivera and publisher Francis Toor published a book of Posada’s engravings, where “La Calavera Garbancera” now appeared as “La Calavera Catrina.”

Rivera again featured La Catrina in one of his most influential works, “Sueño de una Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central,” The mural depicts La Catrina in an elegant gown with a big feathered hat and snake boa, and she is pictured linking arms with Posada and a young Diego Rivera and in front of renowned painter Frida Kahlo.

After she was featured in Rivera’s mural, La Catrina was solidified as a central figure in Mexican culture, and today she is an unforgettable part of Dia De Los Muertos celebrations across Latin America and the U.S. Her likeness often appears on ofrendas and statues as well as films like “The Book of Life” and Disney’s “Coco,” and many dress up and paint their faces like her every year during Dia De Los Muertos.
