History made! Afro-Latina Michelle Colon, who is of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, was crowned Miss Universe Puerto Rico on September 30, 2021. Her crowning marked the first time in years a non-white woman was to represent Puerto Rico at the Miss Universe pageant. Colon’s win is also special given that she was an Afro-Puerto Rican and Afro-indigenous competitor in a pageant that typically favors white Puerto Ricans. Prior to the competition, she had walked in New York Fashion Week in 2019 and was recognized for her philanthropic work as the founder of the C.A.R.E. Empowerment Program, a mentorship program to empower young girls to become future leaders. ⁠
