Dominican-American author Julia Alvarez and her legacy are being celebrated in a new PBS documentary titled “Julia Alvarez: A Life Reimagined,” which examines Alvarez’s life in the Dominican Republic, her family’s trauma from the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, and how to came to be the legendary writer she is today. The 74-year-old writer is known for her 1991 breakout novel “How the García Girls Lost Their Accents’ as well as her bestselling 1994 novel “In the Time of the Butterflies.”
