## Caption

Venezuela has been in crisis since the contentious presidential elections between current authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro and opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez, with both sides declaring victory. Despite the National Electoral Council (CNE), which the Maduro government has a tight control over, announcing that the current president beat Gonzáles by a 51 percent to 44 percent margin, Machado maintained that over 80% of the tally sheets collected from polling stations throughout Venezuela showed González winning my a landslide, referencing the sheets as physical evidence.

Following the election results, massive protests have spanned the country. Venezuela is currently under investigation by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, including persecution, following Maduro’s suggestion for people to report protesters via the government-owned VenApp, launched in 2022 to receive public complaints on power outages and medical emergencies.
