In 2024, Leica Camera AG presented His Holiness Pope Francis with a unique Leica M-A camera, accompanied by a Leica Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 lens. In accordance with his commitment to supporting charitable organizations and social initiatives, the Pope has decided to auction this exceptional Leica set. All proceeds from its sale will go to the personal charity institution of His Holiness. As this year marks a momentous milestone in the history of Leica, we are delighted to auction this unique charity lot at our Century Auction in November.⁣

Apart from its beautiful design, both the camera and the lens bear the exclusive serial number 5,000,000, which further underlines the uniqueness of this extraordinary set. This serial number reflects the long-standing tradition of Leica in reserving special round serial numbers for distinguished individuals.⁣

The camera is finished in silver chrome, with a special white covering, a white-painted base plate, back doors, and some of the controls. The flash cover is engraved with the keys of Peter, while the back of the top plate bears an engraving of His Holiness Pope Francis' motto, 'Miserando atque eligendo', meaning 'lowly but chosen. These special engravings are filled with white, gold, and black paint, whereas the engravings on the chrome Noctilux lens are filled with gold and white paint. Both body cap and lens cap are decorated with an intricate engraving of the Coat of Arms of the State of Vatican City. Additionally, both the camera and the lens are engraved with the year His Holiness Pope Francis received this gift, inscribed in Roman numerals: A.D. MMXXIV.⁣
