Iceland is renowned for its harsh climate, changeable weather and volatile geology. In 1882 a sandstorm devastated a huge area near Hekla volcano but a startling strip of land was protected thanks to sitting in the shadow of a mountain. ⁣

The forest here flourished, however the surrounding area was destroyed and remains barren to this day. Though fertilized over time, it’s indicative of Iceland's vulnerable soil and why trees play such a vital role in the health of the land.⁣
