Polarizing conservative activist and media personality Charlie Kirk was shot while debating students at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, about a day before he was scheduled to come to Colorado.

Kirk is best known for controversial statements and provactive social media content he’s made over the years, including pushing the claim Aurora was taken over by Venezuelan gangs, defending far-right views and as an early supporter of President Donald Trump. He also founded Turning Point USA, a nonprofit that aims to create young conservatives through debates and speeches on college campuses.

At Utah Valley University on Wednesday, he was hosting a “Prove Me Wrong” table where students came up to him debate him on his conservative values. 

According to the Associated Press, Kirk is hospitalized in Utah in critical condition, and law enforcement has a suspect in custody. Videos from the event show Kirk finishing up a point about gun violence and then being shot through the neck. He appears to immediately pass out and keel over while bleeding profusely.
