During campaign stops in North Carolina, Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson said that trans women should “go find a corner outside somewhere” if they need to use the bathroom. And if they’re found in the women’s bathroom, he added that they should be arrested.

“If you're a man on Friday night, all of a sudden Saturday you feel like a woman and you want to go in the women's bathroom in the mall, you will be arrested–or whatever we got to do to you.” Robinson said to a room of his supporters, who laughed at his remarks. “If you are confused, find a corner outside somewhere.”

Robinson, who is running for governor, also vowed to push bills that would ban trans people from using public bathrooms. “We're not gonna talk about it here in North Carolina, we've already passed the law. If we need to pass another one, we will,” he said.

In 2016, North Carolina became the first state to pass a law barring trans people from using public bathrooms, sparking outrage across the country. It was repealed a year later, but has since been referenced as other Republican-majority states move to limit trans rights.

The Republican politician has a history of transphobic and homophobic rhetoric, including likening trans and queer people to “filth,” as well as “maggots” and “flies” in speeches from several years ago.
