Today is World Dolphin Day! It’s a chance to celebrate these intelligent, social animals and to reflect on the threats they still face. The first photo shows dolphins as they should be: free in the open ocean. The second reveals a much darker reality.

In the Faroe Islands, the “grind” is a mass hunt where entire pods of cetaceans are driven into shallow waters and killed. In September 2021, more than 1,400 Atlantic white-sided dolphins were slaughtered in a single day — the largest cetacean hunt in recorded history.

This year alone, nine grinds have already taken place. A growing number of Faroese people oppose the practice, but many remain afraid to speak up. We’re trying to change that.

World Dolphin Day was created by seashepherd in 2022 to honor the victims and shine a light on the ongoing cruelty of the grind. These hunts are excessive, poorly regulated, and no longer necessary.

Dolphins belong in the ocean, not strung up on shorelines. It’s time to end this archaic practice.
