The 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s troubled yet groundbreaking Jaws has brought fans a wave of celebrations—including new home video editions, a feature documentary, special attractions at Universal Studios theme parks, and even a limited theatrical re-release that added another $15.8 million to its global box office. Based on Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel, Spielberg transformed the story of a great white shark terrorizing vacationers off the fictional Amity Island into both a pulse-pounding thriller and an intimate character study. Audiences flocked to the film, establishing what would become the template for the modern summer blockbuster. Now, as 2025 draws to a close, the festivities continue with a landmark tribute in Los Angeles. Beginning September 14, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures unveils Jaws: The Exhibition—the institution’s largest retrospective ever devoted to a single film. Spanning 11,000 square feet and running through July 26, 2026, the exhibition showcases treasures from the collections of Spielberg, Universal Pictures, members of the original crew, and private collectors. Organized by Senior Curator Jenny He and Assistant Curator Emily Rauber Rodriguez, the exhibit unfolds across six sections that guide visitors through the film’s conception, production, release, and enduring cultural legacy. The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, opened in 2021, is a landmark film museum in Los Angeles, California. As the first large-scale institution of its kind in the United States, it houses more than 13 million objects from notable films and is dedicated to exploring the history, science, and cultural influence of cinema. The museum occupies the historic May Company Building, located at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue on Museum Row in the Miracle Mile district. Overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the museum also manages the Academy’s archives. Although originally scheduled to open in 2020, the debut was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The museum first welcomed invited guests on September 25, 2021, before opening to the public on September 30. Shortly after opening, the institution faced criticism for its limited focus on Jewish pioneers of Hollywood such as Carl Laemmle and Jack Warner. The issue, first raised in The Forward by Sharon Rosen Leib, was echoed by ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, Rolling Stone, Bari Weiss, and Bill Maher. In response, the museum announced in January 2022 that it would create a permanent exhibition dedicated to Jewish industry founders. On July 14, 2022, the museum formally recognized Academy Museum Workers United as the bargaining representative for 160 employees. The design was led by Italian architect Renzo Piano, who oversaw the renovation of the May Company Building, rededicated as the Saban Building after a $50 million gift from Cheryl and Haim Saban. Restoration included new limestone finishes and refurbished gold-leaf tiles on its iconic corner cylinder. Inside the Saban Building, visitors find the Spielberg Family Gallery and the Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg Gallery in the lobby, along with the Shirley Temple Education Studio, which hosts filmmaking workshops and showcases memorabilia from Temple’s career. A striking spherical addition, linked to the main building via glass skyways, houses the glass-domed Dolby Family Terrace and the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater, designed for screenings and major events.
