The reality at the end 🫠😂 - what you NEED to know ⬇️

First - can you believe this is in Ecuador?🇪🇨 

Experiencing the massive #quilotoa crater really lived up to our expectations. It’s breathtaking for the entire hike! 

Here are 6 things to know ⬇️

🏔️ This water filled caldera is part of the Andes Mtn range in South America—it’s 2 miles wide and 250 meters deep! 

📍 From the capital city of Quito, Quilotoa is roughly 4 hours by car. Latacunga is the closest major town, where it’s possible to travel by bus (from Latacunga, we spent $3.50 usd pp and it took 2.5 hours 🚌). 

🚐 The majority of travelers visit via day trip from Quito or Latacunga. Guided tours provide transportation, guides, and info about the local culture and history. Most tours we saw were ~ $50 pp. It’s a great option if you’re short on time! 

🥾 Want to hike around the Crater? Then you’ll need to stay in the Quilotoa or nearby area, where there are hostels and accommodations. Day tours only allow you to hike down the crater to reach the lake. 

✅ IF hiking around the crater, get an early start! The winds and rain clouds REALLY pick up by the afternoon, making the ridge line hike even more treacherous. Be sure to pack essentials like lots of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat. UV rays are extra strong at this elevation. 

⚠️The Quilotoa Rim Hike is 8.3 miles around, with 3,500 ft elevation gain, and takes 4-6 hours. Hiking at over 12,000 feet is a challenge in itself 😮‍💨.

▶️ If you’d like to experience even more, opt for the full 3-4 day #quilotoaloop, which offers point to point hiking between villages, and ends at this marvel. We opted for 2 days of the Quilotoa loop, and found the entire area to be breathtaking! 

Be sure to check current weather and local restrictions - this is a challenging hike and it’s essential to be prepared 👍.
