I was supposed to post today announcing the dates for my book tour, but honestly, I spent most of the day crying, on and off, over everything that’s been happening in the news and the thought of posting something so tone deaf to my own literal feelings seemed like not healthy for me, personally.

I remember once during quarantine, I got into an argument with someone about the importance of the BLM movement, and that person said to me, “Joanne, slavery happened 400 years ago,” and I literally burst into tears, canceled the Zoom immediately, and I hated myself for being so weak and embarrassing and prone to crying over “politics” and wished BLM had a better advocate than me. I don’t see other activists and strong politicians or even lawyers I admire crying over these things, but that’s me, I guess. I cry at everything, and I’d rather you see the parts of me I’m embarrassed about than to think of me as someone I’m not. My mother very rarely cries, and it was among a number of things I wished I could emulate. I’m more like my dad, I guess, who cried so hard at The Little Princess, we had to pause the movie for him while he collected himself.

I thought of this story about my mom today, while coming back from the gym. I’d cried in the car on the way home. And it made me feel a little better thinking of Omma.

In case you’re crying today, too—for any reason, not necessarily over what’s happening in the news—I wanted to pass this story along. Hopefully, you can identify that badass woman in your own life who will always fight for you. And if you can’t…? Well, then, I suppose it’s up to us to fill that void.

Also, for those who want to know, I’ll be sharing this recipe for Kimchi Fried Rice Balls later this week and you can sign up for my newsletter to get it (link in bio—where you will also find info about all the cities I’ll be visiting hopefully to see you all 💕).
