I broke my foot less than a week before Beyoncé came to Atlanta for Cowboy Carter… and I still wasn’t missing it.

The last time she was here, I was at the  Renaissance concert. My first EVER concert. I have severe social anxiety, no ticket the day of, and was going alone. I made my own outfit and vlogged the whole experience told myself if I could just get there, maybe magic would happen and get a ticket. 

Three minutes before she hit the stage, a scalper offered me a ticket. I was so desperate, I dragged him to the gate with me to make sure it was real 😅 my surprise, I was just one section off the floor RIGHT by the stage. That moment changed my life. The crowd, the energy (we won the challenge) the compliments on my outfit… my anxiety melted away. That night, I realized I was capable of more than I ever thought possible. If I could show up to a Beyonce concert, I can walk my behind inside a grocery store without a panic attack.

So this year, when I broke my foot just days before Cowboy Carter Atlanta, I was devastated but not defeated. I decided if I couldn’t go, I’d bring the Beyoncé energy to the farm.

I made matching Cowboy Carter-inspired outfits for me, my baby girl, and our alpacas. My 6-year-old son Asher helped design his baby sister’s dress and even helped with alpaca chaps (they weren’t perfect, but neither are we and that’s what makes it art).

I originally planned a full farm fashion show for Black Girl Farm Adventures, inspired by Cowboy Carter. Because being the first Black woman farmer with her own alpaca manure fertilizer brand this is MY country too. Beyoncé made it clear...Black women in boots are not an aesthetic, we are the blueprint!

Reading Matriarch by Miss Tina Knowles reminded me why I started. I learned to sew at 7, raised by my grandmother. I was told I was tacky, too bold, too much just like Miss Tina once was. To know the designer behind Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child faced that same critique? Baby, I was gagged. But also deeply inspired.
