This photo is of me as a teenager pregnant, homeless, and working 35 hours a week while still in high school.

I was taken out of the home at 7 years old and placed in kinship care. Programs like Medicaid and SNAP helped my relatives care for me. When I aged out at 16, I had nowhere to go. I was a junior in high school, pregnant, and surviving because of the same programs they’ve cut.

Medicaid kept me and my baby alive.
Food pantries kept us fed.
And shelters gave us a roof at night.

When I worked in education, most of the teachers I knew were also receiving benefits. Someone you love is struggling to eat right now, they just haven’t told you.

This is why I fight so hard. Why I teach folks how to grow food. Why I built a whole farm, why I'm working to build this farm school & poop production. Why I wrote a book.

My memoir Out the Mud in Heels is a raw look at what it means to survive systems built to forget us.
I was raised by a murderer.
I was a teen mom.
I was failed by systems that kids are still being failed by today.

But I made it.
And I’m bringing people with me.
It's time we stand up for our neighbors & community, they can sign whatever they want. Y'all know what time it is!!!
