I saw this post from dr.softball33 and had to add my two cents. Three years ago my son’s high school basketball coach stepped down as he was going into his junior year.  All eyes were on me to take the job. There was no way I would do it because I was too busy, so I thought. But, then I realized that I would never get these moments back with him so I said yes. Basketball has been so good to me and I’ve learned so much, not only about the game but about life and relationships. The beautiful thing about the game of basketball is, you have to build your individual skill but learn how to use that skill to make your teammates better. Improving your character, helps you become a better player. I enjoyed committing my time to trying to figure out how to help these boys become better basketball players and for some of them, help them realize their dreams of playing basketball in college. I was focused on providing my players with adversity to see how they work through it which will not only help them in basketball but later on in life. Just like dr.softball33 the complaints and whispers about playing time were frequent but never deterred me from walking into the gym everyday and putting them through some type of challenge and watch who could rise above it. To every parent out there that has a child in a sport- leave the refs alone, let the coach be the coach and stop telling the kids what to do during the games and let them listen to their teammates and coaches. Parents, most of you do not go to practice so you have no idea what the game plan is or the schemes that the coaches are trying to run so have patience and respect for the work that staff is putting in with your child. Playing sports is not a right, it is a privilege and playing high school sports is voluntary so please stop behaving like someone owes you something. Playing time is earned in practice and coaches show favoritism to the hardest workers on the team. #earniteveryday
