This week’s #MoodySpotlight is Vanessa Rubio and she’s from right here in Austin, Texas and her second home is Marfa, TX!

Vanessa is a public relations junior with a double minor in media and entertainment industries and business. She is also one of our Dean’s Ambassadors, a COM 301E mentor AND a Texas Tour Guide!

She chose #TEXASMoody after doing an admitted students tour and instantly found her home. “The Dean’s Ambassadors made me feel like Moody College was not only one of the top communication schools in the country/world, but was a home for passionate people who all wanted you to succeed. I knew that if I didn’t give Moody at least a chance, I would regret it. I am now a Dean’s Ambassador to give that same experience to prospective and admitted students!”

She originally wanted to be a nurse, but found her passion for public relations working for her high school’s medical club. “The ability to communicate and connect with those around you, but also combine things like analytical skills, event planning, and execution fascinated me, and I knew that I had the personality and determination for this field.”

Vanessa has also had two internships, one with Austin Film Festival and earlier this year, she interned with Fons PR. This year at SXSW, for her internship, she was on the red carpet team. She got to meet and work with Benny Skinner. “From these two internships I gained editing skills, social media skills, auditing, data analytics, professional communication, event execution and so much more!

One of her favorite Moody memories was Gone to Texas! “I remember meeting so many people and learning about so many different opportunities and feeling like I truly made the right decision about coming to Moody.”

This summer she stayed busy by working as a Texas Tour Guide, studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland and working two sessions of Camp Texas. When she’s not busy working on campus, you can find her paddleboarding at Lady Bird Lake or playing sand volleyball at Zilker Park!

“Moody is filled with passionate staff and students who make you want to push yourself, and I think that is beautiful.”
