I’ve always thought of the First Amendment as a bargain. In 1977, my hometown of Skokie, Illinois, was forced to grant a permit to a socialist group of self-styled Neo-Nazis who wanted to host a “white power” demonstration. Skokie initially refused to grant the permit, but the demonstrators sued and ultimately won on appeal all the way up to the US Supreme Court. Because that is the deal. I will accept the right of Neo-Nazis to march down the streets of my hometown in exchange for my right to march against them. The First Amendment is blind to content because it must be.

I spent all day researching and writing about the First Amendment. I was supposed to spend the day creating content to promote my book and book tour. I was supposed to do that last week, too, when I pivoted due to SCOTUS’s ruling on racial profiling. I did not create The Korean Vegan with the intention of being overtly political—I wanted to share stories that demonstrated how different could still be beautiful and foster a culture of compassion in our country, all while cooking up delicious and stunning Korean food. I am anxious about how much time I’m spending not doing my actual job.

But I have benefited greatly from the First Amendment and I can’t just sit here and say nothing while it is trampled before our eyes. There is a deficit of empathy in this country, a void that’s left over when greed conquers the heart and flourishes, unchecked. I realized, today, how much I still love America and that is why I’m so bothered. I feel like I’m being forced to watch her die.
