If you attended outsidelands this weekend and left wondering about the photos you saw between sets, here are of few of them in full detail.

1. Sutro Baths circa 1957.
2. Ferry Building in 1951.
3. Forest View & Sloat in 1965.
4. Judah & La Play in 1970.
5. Crowds watching a bike race at the Polo Field circa 1910. 

Despite what you may have read on Reddit, there is no formal agreement between our parent nonprofit, Western Neighborhoods Project (aka outsidelandz) and Another Planet Entertainment for the use of the name “Outside Lands.” It’s a historical term, free for anyone to use however they wish. We’ve been using it since 1999 in reference to all the west side history we share, and APE has been using it for their festival in Golden Gate Park since 2008. 

And for most of those years, WNP has been given some sort of presence at the festival—from a booth staffed by WNP volunteers in the nonprofit section for many years, to videos about park highlights and the history of the festival name during COVID, and now these photo montages on major stages. We curate photos that give viewers visual context to the stage names (Sutro, Twin Peaks, etc) plus some other gems. 

We’re always excited to be part of this ongoing history of staging concerts in the park, and we always meet people who would never have known our work otherwise. This year, because of staffing shortages and limited bandwidth, APE staff helped us out by creating this awesome promo for our opensfhistory photo archive.
