Join Kit Ortega and Western Neighborhoods Project for a libatious history walk through Cole Valley and Haight Ashbury–two of WNP’s newest neighborhoods–to kick off Pride weekend. 

Considered one of San Francisco’s most quiet and quaint neighbourhoods, Cole Valley has a deep history of queer community and culture that spans the course of the 20th Century. Cruising Cole Valley (...& The Upper Haight Too!) highlights the lives and legacies of LGBTQIA+ San Franciscans outside of the Castro as we explore sites and subjects that defined queer culture here in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. 

Meeting at a super secret location that was once a popular lesbian bar, we’ll share a no-host drink together and start sharing history at 6:30pm. Then, Kit will lead us through the neighborhood and Upper Haight, ending outside of Cole Valley Tavern (formerly a gay bar known as Bradley’s Corner). Cruising Cole Valley will explore locations that highlight the early gay liberation movement, icons like Sylvester, aka “Queen of the Disco” and member of the drag troupe the Cockettes, and more. This Pride weekend kickoff is an educational bar crawl ode to the queer history of Cole Valley and the Haight, and how the neighborhoods contributed to San Francisco’s status as a hub of queer life and major center of a national LGBTQIA+ liberation movement. 

Cruising Cole Valley is approximately 3 hours long and includes moderate hills, so please wear appropriate shoes and bring layers to make sure you’re comfortable throughout the night. The walk is limited to 30 people and you must register in advance to receive the super secret meeting location. Tickets are priced on a sliding scale with a suggested donation but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
