To Our Kiteboarding and Windsports Community,

For over 30 years Adventure Sports has worked tirelessly to preserve and expand water sports throughout South Florida. 

In the early 2000s, when kiteboarding at Matheson was shut down due to safety concerns, Adventure sports took charge, and thanks to the support of an outstanding community, we were able to safely reopen the site. Since then, we have responsibly operated for the past 20 years.

It is important to note that for the past two decades, Adventure Sports has supported Matheson kiteboarding at a financial loss because we deeply believe in protecting community access to the spot. 

Our lease with Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces (PROS) has run its course, and the County will soon issue a new solicitation for the concession at Matheson. 

Our current understanding is that until a new vendor is awarded the concession, kiteboarding may be temporarily suspended at the park. This decision ultimately rests with Miami-Dade PROS. 

Meanwhile, we are working to present a plan that would allow access during the transition. Our CEO, Kent Marinkovic, has contacted County officials to advocate for a model of self-regulated community access. 

While this approach has its challenges, we believe in the strength, maturity, and responsibility of our amazing Matheson kiteboarding community to rise to the occasion and set the standard.

We’ve also requested a stakeholder meeting with the County and are hopeful it will take place before the next solicitation is issued. We’ll keep the community updated as developments occur.

Our commitment to the local community is stronger than ever. Just as we fought to reopen Matheson in the past, we will fight for kiteboarding and wind sport opportunities in the future.
