At the end of July, Indonesian fishers who sued US canned tuna giant Bumble Bee responded to the company’s motion to dismiss their suit. Their suit alleges years of forced labour while catching fish sold by the brand. ⁣
⁣
Those individuals reflect a wider movement working towards significant improvements in both ocean and workers protection. Environmental protection and human rights go hand in hand. The boots in these images were inspired by the stories of the hundreds of thousands of people in situations of trafficking and forced labour on fishing vessels.⁣
⁣
By filing this historic lawsuit, the fishers from Indonesia are setting the bar, both for corporate accountability, and for the protection of workers in the fishing industry and throughout the supply chain. They draw attention to the global demand to end isolation at sea, which in turn would make environmentally disastrous, illegal fishing activities much harder to get away with.⁣
