Did you know the Battle for the Paddle rivalry started in 1998 after historic flooding in San Marcos? 🚣‍♂️

The original game was delayed, and out of it came one of the most unique trophies in college football—a canoe paddle painted Bobcat maroon & gold on one side, Colonel red & silver on the other.

The name comes from then-SWT Head Coach Bob Debesse, who joked you “needed a boat and a paddle just to see the game.”

That year, Texas State won the first-ever paddle game 28–27, and the tradition was born. 

Now it’s more than just a rivalry—it’s history.
