Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? So was she. Meet Fannie Lou Hamer. ⤵️

Fannie Lou Hamer (1917–1977) was a civil rights activist and organizer known for voting rights efforts. Her advocacy also included racial, food, disability, and reproductive justice. We honor her this #NationalVoterRegistrationDay!

In 1963, after returning from a voter registration program in Charleston, South Carolina, Hamer and several other Black women were arrested for sitting in a “whites-only” restaurant in Winona, Mississippi. At the Winona jailhouse, she and several of the women suffered unspeakable violence and intimidation at the hands of white supremacists and police. In response, she spoke out and furthered the fight for voting rights by co-founding the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), which challenged the dominant force in Mississippi politics, the pro-segregation Democratic Party. During a televised session at the convention, she drew the nation’s attention to the civil rights struggle in Mississippi. Hamer ran for Congress in 1964 and 1965, and in 1968 was a member of Mississippi’s official delegation to the Democratic National Convention.

Hamer’s commitment to justice extended to the realm of food equity and reproductive rights; In 1961 she experienced forced sterilization, which disproportionately targeted Black women in the Deep South, and spoke out. In 1969, she established the Freedom Farm Cooperative, which provided poor families with food and farmers land to work and food to eat. Throughout her life, Hamer worked tirelessly to promote civil and human rights, leaving a lasting legacy in the fight for racial equality and social justice.
