Last week, a lifesaving intervention unfolded on a train in Bengal. Railway staff grew suspicious after noticing 56 women—aged between 18 and 31—traveling without tickets or documentation, their hands stamped with the coach and berth numbers. Trusting their instincts, the staff alerted authorities.

When the train arrived at the New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri, West Bengal, two suspected traffickers were arrested. The women were safely rescued and later reunited with their families.

This rescue is a stark reminder that trafficking often moves in plain sight—and that everyday workers can be the first line of defense.

July 30th marks the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, a day dedicated to raising awareness about human trafficking and advocating for the protection of human rights. An estimated 50 million people worldwide are subjected to modern slavery. This includes 28 million individuals in forced labor and 22 million in forced marriages. Human trafficking is a global problem that goes beyond borders and impacts people all over the world.
