“Iran’s Daughters of the Sea” by foroughalaei 🌊📸 ➡️ #FeministArtFeature

On Hengam Island, a small stretch of land in southern Iran, women stand shoulder to shoulder with men in shaping their families’ destinies. In a traditional society that long sought to confine them to the kitchen, these resilient women defy convention—honoring their heritage through vibrant attire while carrying on one of Iran’s most arduous and perilous professions: fishing.

They are the only female fishers across Iran’s vast geography, venturing into the waters in small, weathered boats while the men are often away for trade or deep-sea expeditions. Using traditional, eco-friendly methods, they cast their lines, believing firmly that “a fish must be caught with a hook to taste good, and fishing with nets robs the world of its blessings.” Yet, their way of life—and even their identity—is at risk as tourism, overfishing, and the lure of urban life pull younger generations away.

“They call themselves ‘daughters of the sea,’ deeply in love with fishing and their traditional clothing—an inseparable part of who they are.” 💬 foroughalaei

Forough Alaei foroughalaei is an Iranian photojournalist whose work focuses on social issues, particularly those concerning Iranian women. She is widely recognized for her long-term project “New Face of Iran,” which sheds light on the experiences of Iranian women and youth challenging taboos. Her work has been exhibited internationally, amplifying the voices of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement.
