Singing Everything opens at Marc Straus @marcstrausgallery on Sunday, March 12th! There will be an opening reception from 4-7 PM – we hope to see you there!

The show’s title references Joy Harjo’s @joyharjoforreal poem ‘Singing Everything’ – a meditation remembering our connectedness to each other, the land, horizons, birth, love, death (moved), and heartbreak. It’s a meditation on remembering to remember.

Central to the exhibition are three large panels featuring embroidered words from the Whitney Museum @whitneymuseum sewing circles. The project started with the Museum reaching out to their communities with the poem and asking, “What do you want to sing a song for in this moment?" Participants were encouraged to write answers and send it back to us as a photo. In my studio we worked to mimic the hand of each participant, translated into over a hundred panels of reclaimed wool blankets. The pandemic disrupted multiple attempts to host sewing circles at the museum, but eventually it happened in March of 2022. It was the first in-person program at the Museum since the start of the pandemic and drew 300+ participants over the course of several days. If the handwritten word is an extension of one's body and the cadence of one’s voice, then all the intergenerational hands embroidering these panels amplify the intention. As witness to the conversations and stories that spring forward when we gather together, the blankets are transformed into a record of energy and experience– a collective meditation, a recognition of what is universal, a chorus of song.

It is through all the senses, in all types of languages, and throughout time, that we tell our stories, sing our songs, listen, remember, and are changed.
