⬇️ It began as pueblo lands during the Mexican period of San Diego’s history. During the 1880’s real estate boom it was subdivided by Frank T. Botsford and George W. Heald. By 1900 there were 350 residents, and now there are over 40,000. It is home to a variety of businesses and scientific research, including UCSD, the Salk Institute, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
🏖️ Quiet Seaside Village: La Jolla was a small, relatively undeveloped coastal town known for its natural beauty and mild climate.
•📸 Tourist Attraction: Even in the 1930s, La Jolla Cove attracted visitors for its stunning ocean views, tide pools, and clear waters.
•🏊 Swimmers’ Haven: The Cove was popular among swimmers and divers due to its calm surf, even before the formal establishment of lifeguard services.
•🛶 Early Recreational Use: Locals used the area for canoeing, spearfishing, and sunbathing — long before large-scale tourism.
•🪨 Unaltered Cliffs and Caves: The shoreline and sea caves were largely untouched by development, maintaining a raw and rugged character.
