For many LGBTQ+ young people, the internet isn’t just a pastime, it’s survival.

Our September 2025 Research Brief reveals that most LGBTQ+ young people go online to connect with others because finding community in daily life is so challenging. When queer and trans youth don’t feel safe or understood anywhere online, their mental health outcomes are significantly worse, with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide risk.

TGNB+ young people are even more likely than their cisgender peers to say they turn to online spaces to be their authentic selves and build connections.

The truth is clear: online environments can be life-saving, but only when they are safe, uplifting, and inclusive.

Read the full brief to learn more about how digital spaces impact LGBTQ+ youth mental health, and what we can do to make the internet safer for them.
