This mountain of discarded oyster shells has been gathered by Billion Oyster Project as part of its mission to restore and protect New York Harbor. Rather than dispose of the shells, the project’s founders have persuaded restaurants to recycle them. The project then transforms them into natural reefs that restore marine habitats and protect New York’s exposed coastline. Beauty in trash.
