## Caption

Roof tiles (giwa, traditional Korean curved tiles) on the outer wall of Jongmyo — Korea’s cultural treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage site — were damaged by a drunk passerby.

According to the National Heritage Administration, the suspect shook and pulled at three sections of the giwa until they broke. Police are now tracking the person’s movements based on eyewitness accounts.

The damage has already been repaired — it took the state’s restoration team about four hours to restore the broken giwa.

But this isn’t the first time: scribbles were found on Gwanghwamun’s stone walls just a month ago, and similar incidents happened last year. Heritage only keeps its true value when preserved in its original form, and even restoration costs a fortune.

Both culturally and economically, these losses are heavy — stronger measures are needed to prevent this kind of damage.
